Coils of Swarf

As a boy, Paul Dirac attended the Merchant Venturer’s School in Bristol, a technical school. His experiences there allowed his biographer, Graham Farmelo, to write this wonderful sentence:

Away from the clatter of machinery, the puddles of oil and the coils of swarf, he learned more of the art of technical drawing.
